I think Eggers is at his best when his fanatical historicizing inform and recreate historical psychologies for the audience to engage with. It allows us to inhabit pre-modern psychologies that are totally alien to us today (like 17th century Puritans or Vikings); the mise-en-scene being an extension of the character's subjective experience. Suffers from the Black Mirror Problem. There is no society that exists outside of its own sci-fi conceit. Every character/world building element only reinforces the feminist idea at its core: women's bodies are evaluated harshly and they are forced to do whatever they can to stay looking young and beautiful. This is true of course, but without a more true to life world built around it, the satire falls flat. It's all too cartoonishly unbelievable.
