A Real Pain 2024
This film’s greatest gifts are Kieran Culkin’s performance and the reflective spaces Poland’s landscape paired with Chopin provide. Its most moving moments spring up out of a delicacy in believable human lightness, not the forced encounters and dynamics Jesse Eisenberg repeatedly shovels in. This is an attempt at a naturalistic reality using characters that feel ‘written’ and pushed around to enforce themes that should and could arise naturally from such a simple touching and charming premise and context.
