Too brutal. Literally. Adrien Brody is great, and there are loads of beautiful shots, but somehow it just feels fake as it's missing even a moment of light human emotion - even though it spans a time period of decades. I can't feel the truth of the downs unless there are some ups to compare them too. Plus The Brutalist adapts the standard story of a "troubled genius", which is pretty played out by by now.
If I read the screenplay for this by itself, I'm sure I would think it was a terrible, terrible idea. But this film proves the huge difference between an idea on paper, and one painted into a movie. Serious vibes, and while I can't explain half of what happened, I definitely feel... it. Makes me want to watch Twin Peaks.
Brendan Fraser's acting was amazing, and had me nearly crying at multiple points in the film almost without realising why. I suppose that's one of the signs of excellent acting.
Overall, a well told story about loneliness, self-guilt, and whether you can ever truly save someone.
