Not sure I'll ever be a real Noé fanboy but he certainly makes consistently interesting films, even if they can be a bit transgressive.
Easy to initially dismiss as hedonistic porn masquerading as art, I think it's more the opposite. There's obviously a lot of vision and intention throughout, even if it's uncomfortable to watch. There's a dense atmosphere of self-centered indulgence (Noé's barely hidden self-references, scenes that just keep going), lots of great cinematography, inspired editing.
