This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
This was just as exquisite as I remembered. What I didn’t fully identify on my first viewing, and which stuck out to me this time, is the degree to which this film is about about a naive and idealistic worldview being obliterated by the moral complexity of real life, conveyed through the collision of post-war American exceptionalism (aided by a healthy dose of classical American myth-making) and the harsh reality and ethical muddiness of life in post-war Europe.

Wow. I could not have anticipated how positively batshit this would get. Easily one of the goriest films I’ve ever seen, and also a complete blast.
