The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie

    ★★★★

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie is ridiculous fun. It's got a unique style and sense of comedic timing but still never loses touch with the enduring charm of its titular characters.

For a movie that has jokes coming out of its ears, the success rate is pretty high. Even the gags that don't work are just weird enough to keep you locked in. It is a little slow at the beginning and end, but once…

    Anora

    ★★★★

Sean Baker's approach to the haves and the have-nots has always emphasized the have-nots more than the haves. This remains true, but with Anora, his protagonist gets closer to the sweet life than ever before. That quick rise and dramatic downfall helps the film to surpass his prior works in terms of scope and cinematic significance.

While not as polished as something like The Florida Project, the twisted cinderella story at the core of Anora feels both timely and timeless.…

You can't sell books on the internet, Jeff. They'll kill you.

There is such a disconnect between the performances on screen and the script's interpretation of events. Every line is delivered with either far too much or zero confidence. Either way, Jeff Bezos is a spineless asshole, and that makes this movie both easy and fun to jeer.

    Mulholland Drive

    ★★★★★

Obviously, I have watched Mulholland Drive a lot. This time it was in a theater though, so that was cool! The bigger screen didn't do a ton for me, but the sound system definitely packed a wallop. The last scene had me drenched in sweat. Loud, unsettling, and genuinely scary.

I think Mulholland Drive is one of Lynch's funnier movies. Everyone was laughing at the wrong parts though. They don't love it like I do!!

Pissed off a whole anime class by comparing this to Akira.

Didn't know that doing so was on my bucket list, but I'm also happy I was able to check it off!

    Beau Is Afraid

    ★★★★

Beau is Afraid occasionally sinks into the furthest depths of neurotic misery porn, but there's an intricacy to the film's central character arc and general plotting that makes it worth watching.

I feel like I might be in the minority here, but that first hour didn't do nearly as much for me as the other two. You only need a couple of minutes in the city and suburban home to understand Beau's character and Ari Aster's personal POV. The bits…
