Devastating political-family drama. I’m realizing this is one of my favorite genres of film - where family and politics collide with crushing effects. Some themes I appreciated: the cost of fighting for justice, how limited justice can be under fascist regimes, the enduring legacies of military dictatorship on the family.

Dahomey 2024
Great documentary - thought provoking, visually and sonically stimulating. I don't watch many docs, so I my frame of reference is limited. I appreciated that it wasn't trying to school anyone or establish 1 way of viewing the topic of artifact restitution. I also appreciate it because I made friends in the theatre and after we hung out and had a great convo about postcolonial art and the politics of representation. This film's power to spur human connection made it special for me. I am glad this movie was made.
