Found myself not really rooting for anyone in this movie. Except for the double dagger welding Mongolian/Prussian guys.
Seems like the tallying up of just the French losses at the end is meant to leave the viewer thinking something trite about how such ambition leads to such misery. Or maybe something about how too much success too early sows the seeds of prideful clouded judgment and megalomaniacal legacy-building. But I think there’s a more fundamental, inescapable truth exposed here: sucks to be French. Everything else is downstream of that.

The Holdovers 2023
Tender and earnest. Nailed the retro aesthetic cinematography, not distracting and helped build the setting. Cried more than once but in a way that made me strangely warm. it produced excellent vicarious nostalgia towards a time and circumstance I cannot relate to, but in the spirit of Paul’s history spiel there’s nothing new under the sun (paraphrased).
Miraculously this movie hit on two of my high school literary favorites: Catcher in the Rye and Meditations. I literally gave my English…
