Topaz 1969
Topaz is a little loved late Hitchcock, his second film in a row to deal with Cold War politics with less than satisfactory results. Yet there are a couple of intriguing elements to reward completists. The boilerplate Cuban Missile crisis plot of Leon Uris’ source novel seems to have constrained Hitch, which likely prodded him to incorporate some experiments in documentary camera style. It’s also a post Bernard Hermann film, which means experimenting with sound…and lack of sound.

One of the most frustrating film experiences of recent memory is this film, an hour and forty minute amazing return to form by Martin Scorsese buried inside a bloated three hour movie.
