Midnight Special wears its influences on its sleeves. It pays tribute Close Encounters of the Third Kind & other films of that Amblin era. It also reminded me of a mix of Starman & Firestarter. Starman in terms in being about a "special being" trying to get to a specific location while being hunted by the powers that be & Firestarter due to the father/child dynamic. Director Jeff Nichols is definitely making something of a tradition, but it's his version, his take on…

Don't Breathe 2016
Don't Breathe is simply a new twist on the house invasion sub-genre of horror. The most terrifying element of this movie is the feeling of being trapped in the dark, & this movie does a phenomenal job of creating a claustrophobic sense of terror. One of the clever tricks Fede Alvarez uses is showing us key elements in the old man's house as soon as the kids break in. As the burglars case the house, it serves as a labyrinth of…

The Grand Budapest Hotel 2014
It's difficult to discuss The Grand Budapest Hotel without wanting to go through it scene by scene to discuss how wonderfully each shot is composed & realized, in an almost artificial world Anderson has created. Some of the snow-covered mountains look like they were constructed like a pop-up book. Only a true visionary filmmaker like Anderson could pull these storybook qualities off. Thriller: A Cruel Picture 1973
Thriller is skillful, high-caliber exploitation. Tarantino translated his love for the film into Kill Bill. Thriller goes far into extremes of violence, & in this case, sex as well. Christina Lindberg plays our heroine who turns from idealistic child to doped up prostitute to badass action star, who becomes as cold as her sadistic clientele. We get many great slow-mo gunshots that make Thriller a true testament to the art of filmmaking. It's glorified violence filmed gloriously. Who needs story development when you have a character hell-bent on unleashing rage on her adversaries. Like one hell of a revenge movie, Thriller delivers that big, bloody payoff.
