This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Confounded by the accusations that this is "too abstract" or that there is some subtext about disappointment in a son. We have a child alienated in a rural life with a dead mother who escapes to a fantasy world in WWII! Very familiar territory for Miyazaki, but still so genuinely affecting.
Manito comes to respect and love the analogs of his female caregivers and understands he can't live in Granduncle's fantasy land. Kind of the opposite of the reaction when you ask me.
