Alexander Payne’s knack for humanism worked for me in this Christmas movie about broken and lonely souls looking for some form of connection during the holidays. Giamatti is playing the same role Tom Hanks played this year in A Man Called Otto, a grumpy man who learns to appreciate life through his peers. There are bits where the film is funny; then it quickly transforms into a human drama where characters talk about their failed experiences trying to live.

I think it’s funny the ending punch line is that Natalie Portman’s character is a terrible actress.
It’s a broken record, but Charles Melton is excellent here. You can see the childlike tendencies in his eyes, how he smokes, and his body language when he’s around Gracie. Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore are doing some of their best work, and Charles Melton almost steals the movie from them.
