Well that was a trip! Unhinged and deranged in parts, with some utterly gross and laugh out loud moments in the mid section. If Aronofsky’s intention was to illustrate that humanity, kindness and love will trump physical appearance and lifestyle choices then he failed. But I don’t think that was his intention. I think he wanted us to stare, open mouthed and disgusted at Charlie’s massive, bulk, while collectively judging his lack of self discipline and personal responsibility, Charlie is immobilised by shame as well as his obesity and Aronofsky’s movie is part of the ‘body shaming’ process. Here I go again with love, loss and connection….this was a shining example of my go to movie triumvirate in action used to heartbreaking, life affirming effect. There were echoes of The Remains of the Day in the buttoned up emotional repression of post war England, but where that movie left most things unsaid, Living took us on a determined journey to give life meaning by explicit acts of love and service.
