  very enchanting use of shadow. we love to see a movie that insists on rearticulating its underlying dramatic tensions and character motivations so often and so hamfistedly that it becomes legitimately comical. wow. everything truly is just a performance for Father. husband is a surrogate Father and i must murder and then kiss him. “you’re not just sucking him off; you’re consuming his entire body.” fuck yeah dude

  veers too much into hagiography for my taste (especially towards the end — the talking heads of new people’s army members saying how much they dream of seeing joma in person and thanking him for his contribution to the revolution were a bit much). tries to split the difference between “a biography of a silly old man puttering around utrecht with his wife” and “depiction of an ongoing people’s war in the philippine countryside” in a way that shortchanges both…

  a contemplation of the possibility of “home” and “belonging” within the settler-colonial imposition of winnipeg, canada & the ways that these concepts can be achieved beautifully or polluted. but fear not — its short runtime and formal abstraction mean that it isn’t as didactic as my description in the previous sentence makes it sound.

  but who cares about any of that. the main thing to note here is that I AM IN THIS MOVIE & IT WON AN AWARD (the audience choice award of the Gimme Some Truth: Gimme 10 in 30! Documentary Challenge). everyone, say “congrats midge” to me, please
