The final act feels so fundamentally dishonest from a character/human perspective that it feels smug. Making a film like, “Oho, the audience will really feel frustrated with this! Little do they know, that’s exactly what I want them to feel!” You can do that without being dishonest just to get to the “cautionary tale” ending you want.
