An exceptional directorial debut. Beautiful filmmaking with a cast that effortlessly embodies their roles and relationships. The subject is important, but it's the storytelling that makes it palatable. Please see this.

The music, and the archival footage of historic performances, is pretty damn great. The interviews are somewhat insightful and personal, especially in getting into pre-band stuff, and there's a lot of emotional heart. But this is as sanitized as it can possibly get, so don't expect warts beyond jokes about whose wife didn't want him playing with which performer. All-in-all, if not for the absolutely beautiful historic recordings, this could have been a Wikipedia article. And it stops right after the second album, quite suddenly. It's enjoyable, quite, if you're a fan, but it's hard to say it's a brilliant documentary.

I remember what a huge deal this film was at the time. And in my head, it came out WAY more recently than 30 years ago. So when it LOOKED old it shocked the heck out of me. But the entire film's style of storytelling, and its core ideas haven't aged well at all. Very old-fashioned comprehension of father/daughter dynamics that is harder to connect with now, and especially as a semi-modern comedy. But worse yet is, despite the fact…

This film has a great cast and somehow managed to make nearly every one of them feel miscast. Poor direction and editing and writing takes multiple fun ideas, and some very cool visuals, and some amazing actors who I enjoy any other time I see them, and makes them a chore to watch. The script needed massive tuning and honing, the director needed a better sense of what to get out of those actors, and the editing needed to feel like a consistent movie. What a shame.
