Neill Blomkamp does his best Michael Bay impression and it ends up being pretty exhilarating and even emotional in the process.
Might just be one of the best commercials I've ever seen.

Well, this movie is pure unfiltered Michael Bay, and that means a tone that ebbs and flows between ridiculousness and gritty intensity, tons of violent and absurdly destructive action scenes that bounce between chaotic and deliberate editing, an overabundance of shots and camera movements that are so inventive and complex in their staging that it boggles the mind just how goddamn many there are, juvenile humor and 90's style sex appeal, and sound mixing and design that begs to be heard in surround sound.
It's pure cinematic cocaine. Either you're in or you're out. I'm in, and I want more.
It's pretty good as a harrowing family drama, but it's a relatively weak horror movie. Well, weak is a strong word but the build up tends to be so much better than the payoff in many cases. Still, it's an expertly crafted film with its own unique style that actually helps enhance the pervasive feeling of dread.
One thing that I found highly amusing is that the whole thing is essentially a get rich quick scheme, but with a supernatural twist.
