  If suffering purifies, I'm 99 minutes purer after watching Martyrs.

  Very few times I've had such a strong visceral reaction to a film. Gory films don't usually get anything out of me because I can see through the artificiality of their intentions to shock. Martyrs was different. I sensed a sincere will to push the viewer's psychological tolerance to its limits. Nothing here is mindless or vulgar, extreme as it may be.
