Unfortunately Eggers’ least substantive. It’s only until about halfway through that Ellen’s relationship with Nosferatu becomes the clear focus of the story, yet the tension is minimal by this point. Is it a story about Thomas encountering and inviting unspeakable darkness or was Ellen capable of containing that darkness from the beginning? Many directing choices also make Nosferatu’s horror feel mild. Maybe I have unfairly high expectations for Eggers, but this was still a lot of fun and looked beautiful too.

All the attributes of a 5 star movie except it escalated to a point that demands greater justification than what was provided in the first half. It all just seems to come out of nowhere

In a second viewing, the narrative isn’t nearly as hard to follow which demystifies it a bit, yet no excitement is ever lost. A great example of how much music and sound contribute to maximizing the scale of films.

Some tonally inconsistent aspects like the breaking of the fourth wall can seem outdated, yet villains this sinister and idiosyncratic (enough to single-handedly drive the narrative) are too exciting to forget.
