like all ghibli movies, the boy and the heron felt a little bit like a mishmash of all its predecessors, taking elements particularly from when marnie was there, howl’s moving castle, and spirited away. however, what i think is different about this movie is that you can interpret it in a lot of different ways. for me, it seemed like an expression of grief and fear.
