Rocketman is a blast of a movie with visually stunning dance numbers and Elton’s incredible discography. Even when the story can drag a little, the presence of Elton’s music always brought a smile to my face. His story resonated with me and I really liked how they didn’t hold back with the gay stuff. I’m probably bias because of my established love for Elton and his music, but this movie still ended up being everything I wanted from an Elton John film.
Following its best picture win last night at the Academy Awards, the question “is Green Book really the best movie to come out this year?” immediately entered my mind. The short answer, in my opinion, is absolutely not. The long answer speaks to a broader issue in that best picture is never really decided solely based on merit. If that were the case, upsets like 2005’s Crash win would have never occurred.
