"Smile" was a good movie, which is why I take no pleasure in saying that "Smile 2" is for the most part badly written, poorly acted, and larded with unnecessary scenes. (For good measure, there's some shameless product placement as well). In spite of its shortcomings – of which there are many – it manages to scare up a spooky scene every now and then, mainly by riffing on scenes or setups from the original. Unfortunately, all these scenes serve to do is confirm that this franchise is pretty much a one-trick-pony that has started veering dangerously close to self parody.

We're All Going to the World's Fair 2021
While well acted by Anna Cobb, this low key, horror-adjacent flick doesn’t. really. go. anywhere. Cool glow-in-the-dark paint, though - points for that, I guess?

Speak No Evil 2022
This is a well made film, but also a deeply uncomfortable one. Maybe leave your social calendar clear for an hour or two after watching it so you can shake off its unsettling essence.

Phantasm 1979
Less a horror movie than a whacked-out adventure/supernatural sci-fi/fever dream, Phantasm feels a bit like a long-lost episode of "Stranger Things." Props to director Don Coscarelli for coming up with a flick that - while by no means a masterpiece - looks and sounds good, and feels more original and unexpected than your usual "B movie".
