Absolute Beginners 1986
I feel like if I had been less stressed while watching this* I would have enjoyed it a lot more but I also almost feel like it’s a little too slick for it to fall into that charming mid-80s independent working-with-what-we-have sweet spot but also not good enough to be actually good. Parts of it I really loved - who doesn’t want to see Dave dance on a GIANT TYPEWRITER?!, the whole opening sequence, the performance by SADE, 80s-does-late-50s costumes…

Straight to Hell 1987
Watched this after a moderately annoying work day while eating a really fancy crepe and it was EXACTLY what I needed! Nah it’s not quuuuite as good as REPO MAN or SID & NANCY but how can anything be?? Still manages to tap into my PRECISE sense of humour y mi novio José es muy bonito.
Also loved Zander Schloss as the hot dog stand guy - I guess it’s true what they say, there IS room to move as a fry cook!Translated from by

Has Anybody Seen My Gal? 1952
How does a girl with more sweater sets than common sense make the return to work after sick leave tolerable? By declaring it DOUGLAS SIRK WEEK, of course!!
The perfect thing to take us from pop quasi-musical week into DOUGLAS SIRK WEEK, Has Anybody Seen My Gal is totally delightful. Like every Sirk film ever, the costumes are a complete DREAM, but this time instead of the usual fanciest 50s dream, it’s a FIFTIES DOING TWENTIES DREAM!! Raccoon coats! Chain-stitch…

I watched this almost every day at one point so now every time I watch it I’m like 😬 what if I hate it this time? Who would I even be if I didn’t love this movie?? And then Micky jumps off the bridge and the Porpoise Song starts and I get goosebumps and I’m like... never mind, this is still THE BEST. 🥰
Also the perfect way to cap off a week of 60s pop quasi-musicals.
