I kind of did not hate this. The writing isn't great, the acting is pretty wooden and the production quality is low, but it's the first Hellboy film that genuinely captures what I've always loved about the franchise. It is also really, really slow for a 90 minute movie.

While perhaps not the greatest monster movie of all time, it has the distinction of doing some really interesting family drama as well as the textual anti-government content that makes The Host something genuinely special. The Host is completely its own thing, but it is also interesting as somewhat of a template film for the work that Bong Joon Ho will continue to use through the rest of his career.

    The film as a whole…

There it is folks. I don't have any other Martin Scorsese narrative features left.

So. I will say that I don't think I can fully be unbiased about this film. It's a story I'm passionate about, adapting a book I read and loved, directed by my favorite director. Killers of the Flower Moon would have had to work hard to get me to dislike it and I can thankfully say that it did not choose to put in that work.…
