Never thought I had to go to bat for The Night of the Hunter, but as all my friends' ratings on this hover between 3 and 5 stars, I might as well.
It's hard to view this American film, drenched in a southern gothic atmosphere, without seeing how weird and wonderful it is compared to films of the era. With the exceptions of other major pictures like *Vertigo* or *Kiss Me Deadly,* few films of their ilk seem to drift…
Pros:
- The inside of 'Stiens mansion appears to be a real location. Despite the dodgyness of the production, it seems pretty swank
- Surprisingly free of overtly racist white people who get the punch that is deservedly coming to them
- curious to watch to see how much the Universal Frankenstein films (and a bit of Island of Lost Souls) is felt on 70s monster movies.

Argento's camera never stops moving in this. Argento is the last of the thriller craftsmen and teases his passion for living amongst bugs and insects as he had done with Phenomena.
Didn't really need the metal music ruining any tension whenever the killer shows up though.
