  This film dared to show the arbitrary and flimsy value put in tradition and authority, with the "noble" samurai being nothing more than self-important gangsters. For daring to question the Japanese tradition, the director Yamanaka was sent to the Chinese military front and was killed in action at age 28. 

  Given how powerful the plot and themes are, and how beautiful the framing and lighting were even in 1937, it's hard not to lament his death as a potential loss…

  Anyway, I literally cried at this. I don't know why but seeing the little Pokémon try so hard to be loved just to be used as a HM slave and death fodder for the trainer, then the little high-five at the end... it touched my spirit whatya want from me I love Pokémon
