Empire of the Sun 1987
It is difficult to watch this film and not feel like it is the most bland adaptation of complex source material. The adaptation takes all the bite and insanity out of the novel, by showing a child maintain hope and survive, rather than show the creation of a near sociopath child who will do whatever it takes to survive. Likewise the anti-colonialist elements are significantly weaker in the film.
