I love when comedy is an entry point for something sincere and tender. “A Real Pain” pays tribute to the historical pain that Benji and David’s Grandmother faced during WWII, but also their interpersonal and personal pain as cousins, and as two people who are very different but ultimately love each other very much. Even if they don’t always understand each other. And all of this is laid very bare through the trip they take to honor their grandmother’s recent passing in Poland. The movie beautifully reckons with what it means to try to find happiness or even peace, in the face of inevitable sorrow.
