An emotional tour-de-force encompassing passion, fear, resolve, grief and nostalgia with remarkable performances from both Pugh and Garfield. Pugh steals the show and will doubtless be nominated for Best Actress, while Garfield provides a more subtle and nuanced performance representative of an actor in full control of his craft. The film is completed by its attentive editing, elevating the story from a standard drama to an immersive epic. The costuming is also worthy of commendation.

It’s time for the annual V for Vendetta rewatch! The ever-relevant and scarily prescient dystopian political thriller continues to delight on every rewatch with its tightly written script, weaving multiple complex plot threads into a tapestry that can be easily grasped, with delightful performances from the entire cast. Especially in the context of the election of the 47th US president, the commentary on politics, power and protest remains topical and timeless almost 20 years after the film’s release.

A charming and funny film overflowing with evident love from its creators. Where it would have been easy to rely on cliché gags, the writers and animators instead think carefully about the world they’ve created, and derive humour not simply from beats audiences have been trained to enjoy, but from an engagement with the story and characters, as wild as they are, creating a far more intelligent film than its surface presentation might suggest.

Outstanding puppetry by a team including Frank Oz and Neal Scanlan demonstrates perfectly why both became major players in the industry. The film also pays homage through its photographic direction to its origins on stage, although these elements sometimes feel superfluous in the new medium. Overall, a fun time made all the more special by the work of so many talented artists off-camera.
