  Pansy is a tough companion to be with for the run of a film, but it's worth powering through, especially for Michele Austin's lovely supporting turn.

  Some stylistic elements don't necessarily work (the interior monologues, a certain ghostly flaskback), but I'd be darned if Maggie Smith didn't carry this film with her astounding performance. Sad, naive, and at times pathetic, your heart aches for her throughout. Some of the other actors are a bit hammy, but Smith grounds every scene she's in.
