Close-Up 1990
Hussein Sabzian is a lonely fellow trapped in an uninteresting life, lacking security, lacking stimulating entertainment, lacking creative outlets. Cinema is his escape. He grasped the opportunity to step out of his life and into someone else's by pretending to be Makhmalbaf, just as We The Viewers grasp the opportunity to step out of our lives and into someone else's when we watch films and when we do impersonations of our favourite actors/actresses, when we randomly act out character idiosyncrasies…

Yi Yi 2000
The late Edward Yang’s masterpiece, Yi Yi, came in 2000, given that it unknowingly perceived such a concise vision of the world's disillusionment post-2000.
This three-hour cinematic marvel is the greatest film, in my opinion, in dealing with modern times, and it has made Edward Yang my favorite director. In fact, Yi Yi is the only film I have watched of his; but it left me with such an understanding of the world at present that I could not shake…

Farewell My Concubine 1993
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Few films capture the sweep of history and the intimate pain of human relationships as masterfully as Farewell My Concubine. Chen Kaige’s magnum opus is a sprawling yet deeply personal historical epic, weaving together art, politics, and unspoken desire over 50 turbulent years in 20th-century China.
At its heart, the film follows the intertwined fates of two Beijing opera actors—Dieyi (Leslie Cheung) and Xiaolou (Fengyi Zhang)—whose bond is tested by time, revolution, and the intrusion of a woman, Juxian (Gong…

I'm Still Here 2024
In a cinematic landscape often dominated by spectacle, I'm Still Here shines with its quiet, yet powerful storytelling. It portrays political oppression through a humanist lens, crafting a poignant narrative that resonates deeply without succumbing to melodrama.
Understated performances and meticulous direction amplify the film's raw portrayal of human suffering and resilience. Striking cinematography complements the somber tone, while the absence of histrionics enhances the emotional impact.
One of the year's best films, I'm Still Here not only sheds light…

Arrival 2016
A film that is beautifully thought provoking in its subtlety and visual expression. A cerebral type of science fiction that forces the viewer to meditate on time, communication, life, death, and love. I found it to be almost spiritual/mystical in nature, and want to see it again in order to understand the bits I missed at first viewing. If you're looking for a Star Wars-type movie, don't bother. If you care to go deeper into the meaning of things, then this is the film for you!

Still Walking 2008
What a simple but powerful film.
I would challenge anyone to watch this whole movie and claim to not see at least one moment of family issues/politics in the film that reminds them of their own family. It's sad and yet beautiful. I don't think I've ever seen a movie in either the West or the East that captures so well the generation gaps in the modern family and the way in which the family of the early twenty-first century…
