Poor Things 2023
file under: could have been really interesting but isn’t ! odd that a film should make such flashy allusions to things like “ethics” and “philosophy” only to reach the end of its bloated runtime without developing any moral or political stakes whatsoever. if it were more coherent, i’d probably call it cynical or nihilistic.
still, some of the dialogue (his forte!) is very clever and the whole thing is miles more imaginative than 95% of the stuff you can see at an amc, so i guess that’s something !! nb: first 45 mins are damn near unwatchable, but it gets better as it goes along.

sex, lies, and videotape 1989
a sublime wet dream for the precocious, pretentious, neurotic bisexual set (aka me) ! truly so riveting i occasionally forgot to breathe. all four leads at the peak of their respective powers. inspires thinking and feeling in equal measure.
also! a rare and life-affirming answer to the crucial question posed by gael garcía bernal on criterion closet picks last year: what was the last film that made you horny? embarrassing that dross from the likes of luca guadagnino passes for sexy these…
