Snatch meets Scott Pilgrim meets Kill Bill meets Grosse Pointe Blank
It may be a period piece created during the silent film era, but damned if this wasn't one of the most emotionally compelling movies I've yet seen! While obviously not intentional as per its age, someone in the casting department knew what they were doing – and the director even more – when it came to putting forth dynamic actors who flex facial subtly rather than hamming it up.
Narratively there's a strong story that for better or worse gets swept…
Whether you consider it a "blaxploitation" flick, Blacula tells a story that deserved a bigger and better budget. There's some tremendous acting and emotional narrative throughout, sadly mired down by limitations on effects and action. The early bulk of the film is entertaining enough and the horror component is almost surprisingly strong, with the vampire element nearly exploding akin to a zombie epidemic. It's the third act that flexes the strongest, making you care more about the tragedy of Mamuwalde's love more than the need to destroy "Blacula".
A haphazard, low-budget affair running high on big visions and clever ideas but little proper sense of execution. Tries both too hard yet not enough. A decent seaside blending of The Shining and Evil Dead, albeit taking some obvious cues from those and other more notable horror films. Honestly not a horrible British take on gory ghost stories but definitely could have used a couple thousand more quid in the budget.
