Pearl 2022
Mildred Pierce from Vera’s POV. celluloid fever dream turned technicolor nightmare. Brilliant. Brilliant. Brilliant. Mia goth turns in a performance that earns her a spot next to Toni Collette and Florence Pugh and Bette Davis. Id say its also a feminist film: Pearl is a monster, yes, but she’s not a cheap archetype of some psycho hosebeast or femme fatale or serial killer. The subversive nature of the movie is in how it allows us to feel equal horror over who is the person is a what’s being done to them; the oppressive societal forces that all but guaranteed her life would be a nightmare.

Literally no complaints except why Dom and Letty don’t have no phones? Why wouldn’t they have phones? Also letty tells dom the water heater’s broken and he replies “that’s the price you have to pay for peace and quiet” or something to that effect and it’s like…are you responding to a different iteration of the script? Or do they just make up dialogue on the spot and use different takes? Because a broken water heater and not having phone service has nothing to do with….agh, you know what, NEVERMIND. This movie is perfect.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I really loved this film. I know, I was predisposed to liking it, I really WANTED to like it, but sometimes that can let you get to overhyped about a film, and this was the exception where it exceeded my very high expectations.
I could go on about what I loved about the film—the outfits, the scene-chewing, that amazing Regent’s Park fashion show, Paul Walter Hauser, WINK!, even the unending needle drops. The way this truly was the Female Joker…
