An old horny cripple with a hooked nose and loads of gold, arrives from eastern europe surrounded by rats, brings the plague upon an idyllic civilised small german town and lusts after a christian woman and blood (of children): sounds like a classic german bedtime story. I just hope Eggers wants to portray the underlying mechanism of antisemitism: projection of one's own desire and cruelty onto a demonized Other, which is then feared.
