this one really does what it sets out to do. it’s a phenomenal use of the screen life form and a total blast to watch. best enjoyed with one’s attention fractured between the live-stream comments and the film itself. the credits-sequence FakeToks bumped it up a half star for me

The Rule of Jenny Pen 2024
this is incredibly upsetting. I loved hating every second of it. learn nothing. expect nothing. go in blind and hang on tight

Immaculate 2024
This film is a gorgeous, topical, pointedly irreverent Renaissance painting. Sydney Sweeney is absolutely in her element here.
It explores the twofold horror of body as vessel: the material horror of pregnancy sans agency and the existential horror of denied subjectivity through projection/idealization.
It’s an amazing allegory for how institutionalized patriarchal violence maintains control over women’s bodies. Obviously it also has lots to say about the church.
It isn’t a perfect film, but I found much of it very moving. The parts that moved me less may well appeal to younger, less jaded viewers, as seemed to be the case at my showing.

Horror in the High Desert 2021
HORROR IN THE HIGH DESERT is a super low-budget mockumentary brimming with genre verisimilitude. Its overt play on hackneyed true-crime documentary tropes works pretty well for me as a found footage devotee.
Much like the true crime docs it emulates, it's definitely commentary-heavy and footage-light, but the skilled cast generally makes it work. The ending felt a bit anticlimactic, but all in all, an enjoyable bit of found footage.
