a new favorite. this is a film that somehow engages every sense. it left me feeling scared of reality, in a good way.

i feel ill. in an honest world this would be one of the defining films of the early 21st century.

rewatched this for the first time in years and found myself deeply moved by the way philip seymour hoffman's nostrils flare when he's nervous laughing.

    Zama

    plays all the hits:

    - the protagonist is a pathetic, repulsive man with few to no redeeming qualities who is largely the cause of his own suffering.

    - the protagonist's life is a barely comprehensible labyrinth of cruelty and disappointment whose escape is clouded by the evil he represents and perpetuates; a hell maybe not of his own design but which he rigorously maintains.

    - the historical setting is ugly and unvarnished (the better to depict colonialism) but still vibrant and full of human detail (the better to depict the perseverance of indigeneity).
