I don’t think the violence in Lynch’s movies is gratifying for him in a sadistic sense, it’s just the absurd cartoon of American life and culture. I don’t think it’s all necessarily satire either, even though that’s the easiest interpretation and maybe it is functionally in some ways. Certainly there’s some crazy satire in this movie: the gruesome slapstick of the climax, Dianne Ladd’s lipstick-smeared mental breakdown. But it doesn’t seem interested in simply mocking American cinema. Maybe lynch doesn’t…
All I can think about is “why didn’t they put this in the game.” Why didn’t they put any of the story in the game. I like creepypasta and suburban loner teens and abusive dads are my favorite tropes, so it would be hard for me to dislike a Jane Schoenbrun movie. Her tricks are more transparent in this one than in World’s Fair but she really means what she’s saying so I don’t mind
This movie does everything it can. The filmmakers used everything at their disposal to try to make this guy seem like he doesn’t suck and is being sincere about his roots and they still failed. It was a fool’s errand. I don’t blame them. The half star is for Glenn Close who deserved to play the grandma of someone who isn’t a human Pedal Pub.
