Before the Devil Knows You're Dead 2007
Somebody lied to poor 82-year-old Sidney Lumet several times for this thing to be released as a finished product. The lighting, editing, pacing and score were so bizarre and distracting.
The story was fine I guess, but what did the time jumps really do for the audience? It felt like they were just a crutch for the writer to avoid actual exposition—which means the characters were just confusing and weird.

Pumping Iron 1977
It’s remarkable how little narration older documentaries like this used to have. But what this allows for is the viewer to pay more attention to things like subtle facial expressions, interactions between the characters, and so on, which I really enjoyed.
For example, it was very poignant and a little sad to watch a 6’5”, 275lb man like Lou Ferrigno still act terrified of his father. That’s the kind of humanity that makes a documentary soar.Translated from by

The Bubble 2021
A cinematic view of a bizarre corner of the world with an outsized influence on its larger community. The strange thing is, most residents are blissfully unaware.
Makes me think of all the nursing homes I’ve visited, and makes me wonder what millennial retirement communities will look like.
Also at the end of the movie an old guy at a bar sings karaoke to Creep and nails it.

Oppenheimer 2023
There’s a “chicken or egg” problem in this movie: does the breakneck pacing force the dialogue to be mostly one-line zingers, or is it paced like that deliberately to cover up the shoddy writing?
I’m not sure about the chicken, but I am about the egg—it is on our faces for hyping up this movie. After the “Barbenheimer” hype settles down, this will be a movie no one talks about or remembers for any other reason than its very successful…
