    Rurouni Kenshin Part I: Origins

    Think of this, and the subsequent films in the Rurouni Kenshin series, as the Japanese Meiji Restoration version of Marvel/DC films where we get a mix of fun, occasional high quality, eye rolling silliness, and most importantly, awesome action scenes. There’s bloody battles, martial arts choreography, and cool looking sets. While this isn’t exactly the second coming of the superb Shogun series (that’s the Sengoku era, but I digress), it’s really entertaining if you temper your expectations.

    Marion Cotillard is extremely believable in this both caring and brutal film.  Pretty unique for a film to cover the reclaiming of one’s life after losing both legs, and to also deal in the world of illegal fight clubs. 
    Extra 1/2 star for Springsteen’s State Trooper and the B-52’s Love Shack.

    I love Wim Wenders, but I’d stick with the actual Edward Hopper Nighthawks painting and any number of other Directors such as Paul Thomas Anderson or Robert Altman for a better film critique of SoCal movie culture.     At a mere 72 minutes, HE WHO GETS SLAPPED still feels like a grand epic, full of betrayal, personal struggle, pathos, tragedy, revenge, noble sacrifice, terror, and doomed love. Not at all surprising this is based on a Russian play as all of the above elements are the very definition of Russian literature and art.
