Incredibly engaging documentary. The story of Mike Mignola, Hellboy, and the beauty of monsters was a wonderful tale. Truly helped me appreciate the character more, and is compelling me to read Hellboy comics immediately.

I'm violently at ends with the style of this movie. On one hand, that the camerawork and editing is really interesting and makes for inspired shots. On the other hand, half the characters look abysmal. Renfield? Ugh. I guess he's fine. Butt hair dracula? Uh, sure, they don't make you look at him long, and Garry Oldman does a good job with it. Really phenomenal in every sense. I do feel that the ball is just about to be dropped as soon as the psychologist explains the mystery more so to the audience than the characters, but then as soon as that's done the ball bounces and slam dunks itself when "Mother" delivers her ending monolog
If Black Pearl hadn't come out the same year, and 9/11 hadn't severely impacted the artistic direction, and any part of the budget was used on advertising.....this would be a phenomenal franchise. Imagine a sequel or shitty little perfect tv series with these characters. More hypercompetent dog, more sickass Welsh tomboy, more of Kales nips, more Best Bro Ever Proteus.
