This is a hard one to judge. My primary experience watching this, which lacks the naturalistic and painterly images of his other films, is boredom. it was most successful in the beginning when it was shaping to be a lush and sapphic illusion. here, i thought their affected innocence was tongue-in-cheek and even laughed a few times. the second half dug in to the mystery with an austerity that cleared away that hazy fantasy along with much of the mystery itself.
