This is a hard one to judge. My primary experience watching this, which lacks the naturalistic and painterly images of his other films, is boredom. The vacuum of space also produces a vacuum of beauty—the chromed space station, in which we spend the majority of the film, succeeds in being claustrophobic and disaffecting, though I'm not sure I appreciate that from a director who I expect to flash between images that are usually airy and cathedral.
