Strong contender for most beautiful animated film I have ever seen. The entire movie is designed artistically to look and feel as if it occurs visually within a medieval manuscript illumination. And it’s successful. The attention to beauty in all the hand drawn backgrounds, the characters forming prefect arches and spirals of being framed by their environment to do so. The serpentine and Celtic knot patterns woven into the scenery and construction of the world. And the way it seamlessly weaves together medieval monastic Christianity with Irish fairy tale is just perfect.

First Shinkai film I have seen but it will not be the last. Utterly gorgeous animation, no less beautiful for being cgi. His blend of fantasy and realism results in stunning shots. No less emotionally powerful for being sentimental and nostalgic, both of which lent the film a charm to which I was not immune. A work of art.

Absolutely brilliant piece of cinema by my favorite director. No one handles sci-fi quite like Villeneuve. The story is of course brilliant, and ratchets up significantly from the first film, capitalizing on all the worldbuilding Dune 1 did.
Hans Zimmer’s score propelled every scene, driving emotions to their limit as frenzied crowds hail the Lisan Al Gaib to powerful crescendos. The whole film is a spectacle, with massive landscape shots on Arakkis and the black and white palate of Giedi…

Strikes me as the goriest and perhaps the most serious Miazaki movie. The stakes are so high and the losses immense. But it’s such a beautiful story. I was particularly won over by Ashitaka‘a kindness and gentleness, and by his unceasing hope, steadfastness, and respect even towards those who mistreat him. The world-building is so magical, it will inspire me for the rest of my life.
    Phenomenal film
