As someone who studies Japanese culture and pop culture, the "twist" of Shinkai's latest film was something that I was expecting. Without giving too much away, I think "Suzume," is, in parts, a continuation and a reversal of his earlier--and very much acclaimed film--"Kimi no Na Wa" ("Your Name," 2016), in that both sort-of explore the idea of catastrophe and its impact/affect on the contemporary Japanese identity and social body.
