Grave of the Fireflies 1988
Deducting half a star because it’s increasingly hard to watch a film when you have to keep pausing to cry. Also, I’m not 100% sure I’ll ever be happy again so that’s an issue too.

DNF. White privilege meets white privilege on a date, gets knocked up, creates the ultimate privilege spawn who gets groomed by Harvey Weinstein.
Poor lady who is sad because she can’t afford £100+ beret buys it half an hour into the film after having no financial windfall. Maybe it’s a metaphor for how she doesn’t allow herself to have nice things, except she has a beautiful house on Hampstead Heath where she spies on Brendan Gleeson washing in a lake. Cry me a river filled with naked Gleesons.

Where do I start? The film begins at the end: we’re drawn in to believe that this menial story will take a dark and mysterious turn from it’s basic, weird-acting character in an unfamiliar environment due to a dubious beach scene and a bowl of mouldy oranges. Olivia Coleman is a terrible mother who gets revenge on another terrible mother by stealing her daughter’s doll. But wait, it’s okay that they’re terrible mothers because their children are annoying and deserve…
