Shane 1953
How many times have we seen the western trope of a stranger riding into town that comes to the aid of those in need? How many times have we seen hired guns and evil men riding for a fall? The backdrop for Shane isn't new and it wasn't new when the movie came out almost 70 years ago. It's freshness, however, comes from its deep-seeded sincerity. The Quiet American 1958
I love a slight case of whitewashed propaganda, don't you?
Audie Murphy and Michael Redgrave make for inch-perfect casting when you look at the novel. Too bad the powers that be took all the sting out of the story (and cast a white woman as the Vietnamese leading lady). Alas, I am expecting too much from a midcentury film about American involvement in Vietnam.
