warm and slow cinema that mirrors tropical malady in structure, with gorgeous urban shot-dwelling and a second half dunked in mystical ambience, though i'm not sure if its poeticism is quite as earned. the narrative seems a nebulous critique of various political aspects of mumbai at first glance, but is strongly abetted by its character writing, to the point where by the end you feel their parallel desires deeply. prabha and anu's illusions and the realities sprung from them are, ultimately, balanced with remarkable dexterity, even if the broader political aesthetics throughout are a little on-the-nose

intellectually dishonest and morally confused—how are you gonna be creatively stylized while still essentially serving as ai propaganda? how are you both anti-human and also anti-nature? why are you painting the island's natives as inherently barbaric and trying to "fix" them? shit is colonialism 101. plus the deeply unmemorable characters, mind-numbingly cliche needledrops, and spoonfed emotional beats make it all feel very uncomfortably sanitized. this shit is not good for your soul man, watch a ghibli movie or something instead i'm serious

in the wake of a sheltered, malleable mind, normalcy can be made insane. the self becomes unrecognized, the closest people lose their meaning, tradition becomes a prison, and we might undergo a claustrophobic mania, sober and afraid and misunderstood. this is what it feels like growing up (or maybe that was just me, for a while), and vewn translates it remarkably.
