Against the towering edifice of real-life absurdity, it's a tough time for satirical comedy. Still, SBC makes a valiant attempt at skewering the unskewerable. As uncomfortable as it often is - and it really often is - it's also frequently very funny. Maria Bakalova is marvellous. I could do without the shock-humour, not for any puritanical reason, it's just a bit dull and unnecessary. I found myself generally more interested in the behind-the-scenes than the in-front-of-the-scenes, which probably isn't a good sign, but anything that takes swings at tyrants is alright in my book. Fairly niice.

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen 1988
I must declare an interest - I am very basic. I really do dig a good fantasy adventure, and this is a goodun. If only the Baron was just a tad less uncomfortably horny. But still, a fun romp despite the hump. It doesn't deserve four and a half stars -and Gilliam DEFINITELY doesn't- but I irrationally love it, so here we are.

On the Rocks 2020
I'm prepared to admit there may be subtleties I didn't see, but what I saw was a shonky rom-com in indie trousers. The performances are probably good, but then it's hard to make them out through the gloom. A few chuckles, some mild intrigue, quite a lot of wondering what the point was.

True History of the Kelly Gang 2019
Strong performances and pretty visuals aren't quite enough. Too long and too cold. Russell Crowe and his bawdy singing though, I'm a fan.
