I mean this was phenomenal. Incredible acting, very funny, and just so enjoyable. Very easy to get into and though it’s long and the plot gets far-fetched it is so easy to root for most of the characters and keeps your attention. Mikey Madison as Anora was funny, believable, wildly intense when needed, and great in this role, and so many other characters fit their roles perfectly: Igor the big thug with a big heart, Ivan as the stupid bratty…
This was good, tight, funny, smart, but so fucking weird. Culkin’s character gave me anxiety unlike anyone I’d watched in a while and found his crude, roller-coaster outburst of emotions to be annoying, cringey, and eye-rolling. He certainly is an interesting character, and the juxtaposition between him and Jesse Eisenberg’s character is incredibly well-written and well-acted and creates interesting conflict just by their contrasting personalities, so I understand the nominations. However, the cringe wasn’t for me, and the ending left me scratching my head and underwhelmed.
Wow. I had high expectations for this and mostly was hoping to just be blown away and I was. I’m sure it will clean up in the sounds / visual categories especially - the constant fast-paced background music had me on the edge of my seat Uncut Gems style with no ability to relax - but it is also masterfully written.
