How could they do this to me? How am I going to watch the rest of the SFF films? My first film of the 2023 Sydney Film Festival has set the bar so incredibly high I’m afraid that the following films might only stand in its shadow.

Riceboy Sleeps is a heartwarming, heartbreaking, heartfelt coming of age. Loosely based on Director Anthony Shim’s own experiences, Shim immerses us so perfectly into the Kim family’s story that their emotional journey is…

In 1991, Japan's stock and housing market, which had been greatly inflated for the past five years, burst. The subsequent economic stagnation, social turmoil and societal upheaval for the next 10 years was dubbed Japan's "Lost Decade". From 1991 to 2003, the Japanese GDP only grew by about 1% annually, a trend that continued into the 2010s. As unemployment rose, job security and benefits plummeted and wages stagnated. Coupled with rising expectations from parents for academic success and facing bleak…

Way mid. So shallow. Toni Colette deserved better.

This should have been a concept film about cloning. Instead, it tries to tackle sooo many things, yet never actually addresses or explores in any depth anything. All we get is that Trump bad, protect animals, and treat people better.

Complete dumbed down mishmash of every Bong film before it. Hierarchy! Cute animal! Post-apocalyptic snowstorm! Human rights! Cult of personality! Factorio??? Give me a break man.

Somehow it comes down to movies in Korean are good and movies in English are bad. Insane. Your two and a half hours would be better spent playing Citizen Sleeper.

    This one was special.

Oh to be in a 2000s Taiwan rock band with a motorbike and a cool Japanese gf.

    Someday or One Day

God this movie is such a mess. An attempt to adapt the original drama series (936 minutes btw) into a 107 minute film would never do it justice, but this attempt is feeble to a ridiculous extent.

Perhaps the most glaring issue with this film is the lack of clarity and direction. Because the film has borrowed the complex time travel mindswap mechanism from the drama, they simultaneously spend too much of the runtime explaining the mechanism but also don't…

    Invisible Nation

    ★★½

Propaganda (non-derogatory). Invisible Nation is a documentary that clearly and fiercely pushes its narrative, one of Taiwan self-determination and against China. It basically serves as an introduction and beginner's guide to the modern Taiwan-China situation.

It's propaganda, but it's rousing and effective propaganda. It's very moving, in tandem with swelling music, and many in the cinema were moved to tears. But it's also very on the nose, comically so at times. Whenever China is mentioned or shown on screen, dark,…
